The first baby born in Blaine County in 2008 was born to a mother whose birthday is Jan. 1.

Amy Le Doan, weighing in at a girlish 6 pounds, 13 ounces, made her appearance at 11:08 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center south of Ketchum.

Doan is the first child of Charlie Doan and Nga Le of Hailey. Nga was born in Vietnam on Jan. 1, 1975, though that date wasn't celebrated as New Year's Day there. The Vietnamese New Year is celebrated on a lunar calendar in alignment with the Chinese one, and this year it's Feb. 7, so, as usual, Nga was spared the competing celebrations.

The Doans own Charlie's Salon in Ketchum. He has lived here for 16 years and she came six years ago.

The last baby born at St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center in 2007 just missed the honor by coming into the world on New Year's Eve.
