Blaine County Recreation District Nordic Instructor Pam Street is ready to give lessons in Quigley Canyon.

South valley residents have another good reason to get outside this winter. The Blaine County Recreation District has officially opened its Quigley Canyon Nordic trail system east of Hailey at the end of Fox Acres Road. Quigley Nordic is open from sunrise to sunset daily. A North Valley Trails pass is required.

"I'm so excited that we are open," said district Administrative Assistant Janelle Conners. "It's skiing really well. I'm going out there at lunchtime."

Ten kilometers of easy to intermediate skate-ski and classic cross-country ski trails have been recently groomed, along with a 3-kilometer loop open to dogs.

On Jan. 7, district will begin offering cross-country skiing lessons in three-week sessions for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers. The lessons will cost $45 per session with online registration available through the district's Web site, www.bcrd.org. Private lessons are available through the district by calling 788-2117.

The beginner class is designed to work with first-time or inexperienced skiers who want to learn or improve. The first session will meet once a week on Fridays at Quigley Nordic from noon to 1 p.m.

Intermediate-level skate skiers will benefit from classes focused on skating technique, efficiency and speed. Skiers will learn to finesse V-2, V-1 and V-2 alternate techniques. The group will meet Mondays from noon to 1 p.m.

The advanced-level skate ski group will focus on technique as well, but with an emphasis on training for racing. The advanced session will meet on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
