Masters kick off 2008 at Tamarack Resort

Over the Jan. 5-6 weekend


Alpine Masters ski racers will kick off their 2008 race season Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 5-6, with Western Idaho Open giant slalom races at Tamarack Resort 100 miles north of Boise between Cascade and McCall.

There is plenty of interesting terrain to ski at the newest ski resort in the U.S. Race fee for the Western Idaho Open is $27 per day or $54 for the weekend. There is no day-of-race registration for this year's series.

E-mail your intent to race to intermountainmasters@gmail.com. And bring your check already made out to Intermountain Masters. Check-in Saturday, Jan. 5, from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Resort Operations next to the Medical Clinic at Tamarack.

Governed by the U.S. Ski Association (USSA), Masters ski racing is the premier adult ski racing series in the country.

Invited to participate are racers of all levels, from beginners who enjoy exciting race courses, to former college racers and Olympians. Age ranges are 21 to over 80 with competition occuring in five-year age groups (25-29, 30-34, 35-40 and up).

Intermountain Masters races are held at Idaho, Utah and Wyoming ski areas. Most race days have two runs and are usually completed in early afternoon, leaving time for free skiing and an awards parties.

Jan. 11-13, super giant slalom at Big Sky, Mt.

Jan. 18-20, Skoch Cup SG/GS/SL on Baldy at Sun Valley.

Jan. 25-27, Loritz Cup SG/GS/SL at Park City, Utah.

Feb. 7-10, Western Regionals SG/GS/SL at Winter Park, Colo.

Feb. 11-13, the Ken Corrock Downhills at Soldier Mountain Ski Area near Fairfield.

Feb. 16-17, Cowboy Classic GS at Snow King, Wyo.

Feb. 23-24, Jans Cup SL/GS at Park City.

March 1-2, Jans Cup SL/GS at Wolf Mountain near Ogden, Utah.

March 6-9, Internationals GS/SL at Banff, Alberta, Canada.

March 16-22, Nationals (all disciplines) at Mammoth Mountain, Ca.

March 29-30, Jans Cup GS/SL at Snowbasin, Utah.
