Compiled by Wood River High School student and Hailey resident Emily Slike as part of her senior project, "The Jewish Heritage Cookbook" will benefit The Hunger Coalition.
It's currently available in Ketchum at Chapter One Bookstore, Vertu at 713 Leadville S., the Wood River Jewish Community at 471 Leadville Ave., Sun Valley Brokers at 680 Sun Valley Rd. and at Les Saisons, or by calling Slike at 788-9366.
The book contains recipes contributed by Wood River Valley residents "interested in honoring their heritage and supporting a charity that helps the valley's own," Slike said. "Most recipes are traditional, like Noodle Kugel and Matzo Brei, but some have been updated for people who have busy schedules, like the Gefilte Fish—or 'How to doctor up gefilte fish from a jar.'"
As well, contributors added stories about how the recipe was handed down from generation to generation from the "old country." Hebrew phrases are typed across the bottom of each page, such as "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world" and "Food is our common ground, a universal experience."
Slike dedicated the book to "my Bubbi Pinkie, who even though passed when I was only seven, showed me how to enjoy every second of life."
