Friedman Memorial Airport Manager Rick Baird laments that "when inclement weather sets in at Friedman," "another winter will come and go without TLS, and thereby the predictable cancellation of flights to and from Hailey and the busing of passengers to and from Twin Falls airport".
The simple fact is that Friedman Airport, surrounded by mountains on three sides, is not safe for operation in inclement weather even with an instrument landing system. A slight mistake or miscalculation by a pilot can turn into a disaster, even in good weather. In bad weather it's a tragedy looking for a place to happen.
The FAA and Skywest's not certifying this "transponder landing system," which 95 percent of airline and corporate pilots have never even heard of, let alone been trained in, was a correct decision.
Yet it seems that Mr. Baird, the airport authority, and the resort people are hell bent on keeping Friedman where it is.
