Sun Valley Youth Hockey Association teams played at rinks in Sun Valley, Idaho Falls and Salmon last weekend and are looking forward to more games before the holiday.
Midget Invitational at home
The Boise Junior Steelhead Midgets (ages 15-18) avenged their only loss of last weekend's Sun Valley Midget Invitational tournament in Sunday's championship game played at Sun Valley Skating Center.
Boise (3-1 overall, 18-6 goals against) trounced Jackson Hole (3-1) by a 6-1 score Sunday after losing to the Wyoming skaters 3-2 in a Saturday preliminary contest. The Idaho Falls Eagles (1-3) avenged an earlier 3-2 setback with a 4-0 victory over Sun Valley (1-3) in Sunday's third-place consolation final.
In preliminary games of the four-team tournament, Sun Valley fell 4-0 to Junior Steelheads, won 3-2 over Idaho Falls and lost 2-1 to Jackson Hole.
Sun Valley goal scorers were Jackson Bates, Latner Straley, Patrick McMahon and Tanner Flanigan. Credited with assists were Niels McMahon, Reed Stokes, Tommy Heinrich, Straley and Bates. Between the pipes were goalie Colby Stoecklein (102 saves on 113 shots) and Cody Levitan (28 saves/30).
The local Midgets travel to the Idaho Falls Midget Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15-16.
PeeWees have fun in Salmon
Talk about a balanced attack! Eleven skaters from the Sun Valley PeeWees (ages 11-12) scored goals during a 4-0 weekend in Salmon. The Sun Valley team coached by Mike Punnett and Bobby Noyes outscored its four opponents 23-5.
Goalie Willis Sanchez-duPont notched two shutouts in his four games as Sun Valley finished its weekend with 7-0 and 4-0 victories over the Salmon girls and Bozeman. Sun Valley outshot the Montana visitors 51-11 in the finale.
Jon Paris recorded a three-goal hat trick in Sun Valley's 6-1 win over Salmon Saturday afternoon. Mason Noyes had a hat trick in Sunday's 7-0 victory over the Salmon girls. In the only close game, a 6-4 win over Bozeman Saturday night, the Sun Valley skaters tallied five goals in the third period—by Paris (2), Sam Ruddell, Drew Barsch and A.J. Rierden.
Claiming the Wee vest was Liam Jablonski (1 goal, 7 assists). Other SV scorers were Paris (6/0), Noyes (3/1), Rierden (3/1), Cam Benson (1/3), Cam Jenner (2/1), Barsch (1/2), Parker Weekes (2/1), Ruddell (2/0), Gage Jorgensen (1/1) and Riley Sibbach (1/0).
Squirts succeed in Idaho Falls
The Sun Valley Youth Hockey Association (SVYH), in its 32nd winter season, sent two Squirt (ages 9-10) teams to last weekend's Idaho Falls Travel Squirt tournament. And it was a win for the entire program.
Sun Valley did some cross rostering with 22 kids and its two tournament teams finished in first place and third place (in a tie). Everyone pitched in, enabling the kids to play a bunch of games and have fun.
The Sun Valley first-place team defeated the Idaho Junior Steelheads from Boise 3-2 in the championship game. Scoring were Peter Wolter, Brandon Benson and George Everitt.
Overall the two Sun Valley squads went 6-2-1 on the weekend. Tripp Hutchinson logged eight of the nine games in the goal and Eli Conrad the other.
"All the kids played extremely well," said coach John Miller. "We had great passing and great defense. Overall it was a terrific performance."
