Obama fails on conservation

Do any of us know where the Democratic presidential candidates stand on conservation issues that affect Idaho? Barack Obama is now on record favoring the interests of multi-national mining corporations, saying he'll vote against reforming the outdated 1872 Mining Law that conservationists have been urging an overhaul on for many years.

The recent passage of a mining law reform bill in the U.S. House of Representatives by a two-to-one margin can be hailed as a great step forward for the people's best interests. Idaho's priceless waterways have long endured pollution abuses by hard rock mining.

Until now, Obama seemed like a viable candidate. His pledge to vote against mining law reform when it arrives in the Senate should clarify his identity as one who may prioritize his favor toward corporate agendas on many fronts. For me, this renders his bid for the presidential nomination untenable.
