Hailey Duke fifth in Nor-Am slalom at Winter Park

Ketchum native Hailey Duke, 22, placed fifth in Friday's NorAm Cup Super Series women's slalom race at Winter Park, Colo. The Boise resident and Park City SEF racer was the top American, finishing behind four European women.

Second after the first heat, Duke fought her way through problems on the second run to finish 1.28 seconds behind winner Kathrin Zettel of Austria. Duke's finish came five days after the rookie U.S. Ski Team "C" team racer competed in a World Cup slalom race at Panorama, B.C., Canada.

The daughter of former Sun Valley ski instructor and martial arts coach Larry Duke started skiing at age two on Sun Valley's Dollar Mountain and raced for the first time at four in the Papoose Club Kindercup. Hailey's breakthrough 2006-07 ski season included 17 podiums (12 slalom, 5 giant slalom), from FIS-B and college races to NorAms and the U.S. championships. The 5-9, 150-pounder was the national slalom bronze medalist in 2007.
