Use energy-saving holiday lights

String lights to be used as decoration during the holidays are now available in LED (light emitting diode). LED string lights last up to 20 times longer than traditional lights and consume less than a quarter of the electricity that fluorescent lighting does.

LED string lights are available in Ketchum and Twin Falls, the Ketchum-based Environmental Resource Center said.

Hailey will parade into holidays

Sponsored by the city of Hailey, the Hailey Chamber of Commerce and the South Valley Merchants Alliance, the annual Hailey Hometown Holiday parade and party will take place on Saturday, Dec. 1, beginning at 6 p.m.

The parade will run on Main Street from Carbonate Street to Roberta McKercher Park. Float awards will be given in three categories: Hailey, Hometown and Holiday. To enter, simply line up at 5:30 p.m. in front of Zaney's on River Street.

The party will move to the Inn at Ellsworth Estate on South Third Street for refreshments, Santa and music. Everyone is welcome.

College students get discount

Sun Valley Co. has found another way to help out locals. Graduates of Wood River High School, the Carey School or The Community School who are attending college will be able to show their college IDs at ticket windows this winter to receive the Blaine County student rate of $23 for a day of skiing.

This special program will be available only during Christmas break, Presidents' Weekend break and Easter break.

Gift will help local ski patrol group

Money donated to the Galena Backcountry Ski Patrol by the Willard L. Eccles Charitable Foundation will be used for operational expenses and to purchase much-needed rescue equipment.

A news release from the local group states that the funds will be used to buy new rescue sleds and gear, training equipment, a replacement yurt cover and a new trailer for storing rescue gear. The funds will also be used as seed money for a youth program organized by local ski patrol member Diane Barker.

Make county tax payments online

The Blaine County treasurer has announced that county residents can now make tax payments online or over the phone in addition to making the payments at the Treasurer's Office in Hailey.

Taxpayers can make their tax payments with American Express, Discover, Mastercard or VISA credit cards. Payments can also be made with a debit card or electronic check. The Treasurer's Office contracted with a third-party vendor to make the online bill-pay possible.

Intolerance and our students

On a daily basis, students in high schools across the country are exposed to degrees of intolerance, lack of personal and social responsibility, abuse and negativity about their communities.

Seeking to address these topics, a panel discussion will be presented at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, by. St. Luke's Youth Adult Konnections, the Wood River High School, the Parent Teacher Student Association and Blaine County Probation.

"Be the Change: A Discussion of Community, Participation, and Responsible Relationships" will be held in the WRHS Distance Learning Lab.

This event is free and open to the public. WRHS students, parents, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend along with other community members.
