The fourth annual Turkey Trot 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) holiday event provided an alternative activity for many last Thursday while downhill skiing was postponed a couple of days by mild weather.

The Thanksgiving Day race that benefits the Souper Supper drew a record 443 participants, all out for a little pre-turkey activity. Many families took part and made the event a big part of their holiday.

Organizers moved the race start and finish to The Community Campus in Hailey this year to provide better parking for the large number of participants ranging in age from infant up to 81.

"I keep thinking that our numbers won't be as large as the previous year, but I've been proven wrong year after year," said race director Daryl Fauth of Hailey, president of Blaine County Title, the Turkey Trot's main sponsor.

Three-time Turkey Trot winner Brad Mitchell of Hailey broke his own course record with a time of 17:58. Hailey's Jeff Roth finished in second at 18:01 and Bill McCann of Ketchum was third in 19:41.

Leading females were fourth-place Kitty Marcroft of Hailey at 19:42, Georgie Montgomery of Ketchum 21:21, 13-year-old Kaitana Martinez of Hailey at 21:52 and Ramie Dennehy of Hailey 22:06.

Young Benjamin Stout, 13, of Bellevue improved his finishing time by nearly six-and-a-half minutes over last year and cracked the top ten with a ninth-place finish of 20:20.

Other runners with big time improvements compared to last Thanksgiving included Kaitana Martinez 5:10, Georgie Montgomery 3:47, Jason Dodge 14:40, John Gorham 3:47, Greg Pfeiffer 8:11, Stephen Pfeiffer 2:48, Scott Montgomery 8:35, Jessica Kolkmann 3:11, Mike Weber 19:48, Kim Fluetsch and Allison Fluetsch 4:17, Anne Weber 17:32, Jackie Hennessy and Dave Hennessy 4:57, Hannah Hennessy 4:54, Emily Siegel and Neil Siegel 6:41, Matthew Galgano 6:52, Ronald Taylor 6:15, Val Seamons 3:55, Kelly Baxandall 3:18, Patty Lewis 3:37 and Mary Ann Syms 3:21.

With help from co-sponsors like The Elephant's Perch, Sun Valley Online, Copy & Print, Girls on the Run, Davis Embroidery and Hailey Coffee (hot beverages for a chilly race morning), about $3,000 was raised for Souper Supper, a non-profit organization that provides two hot meals a week for those in need.
