Good things are happening for Wolverine Rage

That?s the message of Monday?s football banquet

Judging by the enthusiasm shown by coaches, players and parents at Monday's Wood River High School football banquet in Hailey, you'd never know the Wolverine varsity had suffered through a tough 1-7 season—losing its seven games to teams with a combined 60-14 record for the fall.

"Good things are happening for Wood River football," said Pete Kramer, president of the Touchdown Club booster club. "We were 1-7, but I think there are a lot of people here who had a heckuva good time this year."

Head coach Mike Glenn said Wood River was hit by "a perfect storm" of circumstances.

Glenn said, "We were spread thin with three teams (varsity, JV, freshman), our schedule was brutal, there was the fire and the cancellation of the Century game, and we were young, thin and outsized—and a lot of kids hadn't played football.

"We asked so much of our guys and it showed, but they stood firm and did a great job."

"I'm excited for next year, it's going to be great," added Glenn, who coined the school's "Wolverine Rage" motto referring with its letters to Respect, Attitude, Guts and Enthusiasm.

Glenn announced the Wolverine players chosen for Great Basin Conference West All-League teams. Two seniors leading the way on the first team were Jared Rade (inside linebacker) and Erik Jacobson (outside linebacker/tight end).

Second teamers were senior Danny Kramer (defensive back and quarterback), senior Matt Staskiewicz (wide receiver and return specialist), senior Matt Libert (running back), junior Michale Brunker (defensive back), junior Sean Bunce (defensive back), junior Rafael Barriga (kicker) and junior Luke McNees (defensive line).

Honorable mention All-League selections from Wood River were Brunker (wide receiver) and sophomore Tyler Peters (inside linebacker).

Glenn and his varsity staff John Rade, Pete Naumes, Shawn Huntington and Jeff Loomis gave special awards.

Most Inspirational chosen by players was Jared Rade. Danny Kramer won the first annual Wolverine Rage Award, while seniors Isaac Sherbine and Nick Carnes shared this year's Attitude Awards. Senior Daniel Cortez was the winner of the Attendance Award.

Most Improved were Sean Bunce, Michale Brunker and Tyler Peters. Most Coachable was Luke McNees. Touchdown Maker was Matt Staskiewicz. The Offensive Rock was Matt Libert. The Defensive Baller was Jared Rade, and the Ironman was Erik Jacobson.

Captains' Awards went to Kramer, Rade, Jacobson and Libert.

First-year junior varsity coach Shawn Huntington representing his assistants Josh Alstrom and Billy Kramer revealed the JV award winners.

They were: Most Inspirational, sophomores Keven Abbott, Nick Chase and Jordan Flolo; Most Improved, sophomore Sam Schwab; Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore Tanner Orchard; and Offensive Player of the Year, junior Morgan Brashears.

Freshman coach Chris Cey with assistants Charley Miller and Bruce Tuxhorn honored the 25-player ninth-grade team, a "super responsible group that beat Jerome and had Minico on the ropes," Cey said.

Most Inspirational was Willie Dugger. Most Improved was Ben Hofferber. Defensive Player of the Year was Nathan Farrow. And Offensive Player of the Year was Miles Hendrix.

Touchdown Club president Kramer explained the things accomplished by the parent group this year and thanked his officers Martin Chandler, Anne Jensen and Louise Isaacs.
