The Kneeland Gallery in Ketchum will kick off the holiday season with its annual "Art in Miniature" exhibition, which features works 9"x 12" or smaller. Perusing the show is not only interesting, but it is a learning experience in a popular American art form.
Featured in this year's show are the works of Sherry Salari Sander, Joe Anna Arnett, Bart Walker, Lori McNee Watson and Robert C. Moore, who were all participants in the "American Art in Miniature" show at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Okla. The exhibition took place this fall and featured over 190 artists. The show was by invitation only.
Ketchum artist Lori McNee Watson will be exhibiting her plein air paintings as miniatures, which often have much bigger stories to tell than what is illustrated.
"There are more challenges outside than in the controlled environment of my studio, and I must respond quickly," Watson said. "The light is constantly changing, and I have to deal with bugs, weather and people."
Other artists who work in miniature include Colin Poole. Poole's paintings embrace a classical realism, which exhibit an intense personal vision of nature. Poole's work is included in The Kneeland Gallery's current exhibition.
Watson and Lona Hyamas-Smith will be in attendance for the Dec. 28 Gallery Walk, but their work will be part of the Kneeland Gallery's new exhibition for Gallery Walk on Nov. 23.
