The Carey girls' basketball team began the season on a happy note, outperforming Oakley Tuesday in a 52-25 victory.
Posting double digits in three out of four quarters, the Panthers (1-0) held a 17-9 lead at halftime and maintained their advantage with 17 and 18-point frames in the second half in a 17-point win.
Coach Lane Durtschi said he was happy with his team's play, especially considering they bounced back from a 5-point second quarter.
"We went in and talked about how you have to play each quarter. You can't sit back and watch," Durtschi said. "And they responded. Our goal is to play so well, we don't have those letdowns."
Durtschi said a strong inside game helped three players post double digits: Amy Ellsworth led the way with 12 points. Jessica Parke and Kelsey Green scored 10 each.
Junior varsity player Emilee Butcher contributed 9 points in eight minutes of work.
"She worked really hard," Durtschi said. "If she keeps playing like that and she won't be on the jayvee for long."
The remaining 11 points were split among four players: Kayla Bailey (4 rebounds/2 blocks) 5, Jenn Cenarrusa 3, Kendra Olson 2, and Shelby Hansen 1.
Carey is idle until November 29, when they will face defending 1A state champion Richfield.
"We will use the time to build our endurance and gain more confidence. We are going to be able to tell a lot about our team when we play Richfield," Durtschi said.
