"It was a great compliment for a bunch of classy girls," said Wood River High School varsity volleyball coach Tim Richards after his team won the State 4A Sportsmanship Trophy Oct. 27 in Coeur d'Alene.
Because his team was such a class act, Richards said he wore the same tuxedo that he wore at his daughter's wedding for Wednesday nights otherwise informal Wolverine volleyball team awards banquet in the high school commons area in Hailey.
Seniors Hannah Ward and Hannah Gove, co-captains of the Wood River squad that earned the school's 20th district title, shared the team's Best All-Around Player award to go with the Great Basin West Conference "Players of the Year" honors they had nabbed earlier this week.
Most Inspirational, chosen by her teammates, was Katie Pruett. Sharing Most Improved were Hanna Gustafson and Kaylee Baker. The Defensive Player of the Year was Angela Coleman. Kylie Anderson picked up the Coaches Award.
Wood River (20-13-2) earned its eighth consecutive 20-win campaign with one match victory for fifth place at the State 4A tournament.
Award winners for coach Gary Carr's junior varsity (16-9 matches, 28-18 games) were Monica Garceau as Best All-Around Player, Jessica Hamilton with Coaches Award and Chelsey Souligny as Most Improved.
Freshman coach Kim Young also saluted her 12-15 squad that competed in three tournaments.

In addition to Hannah Gove and Hannah Ward, who were named co-MVPs, four other Wolverine players were named to the Great Basin West All Conference volleyball squad.
Kaylee Baker was a first team selection, along with Laura Morgenthaler and Angela Coleman, who were selected for the second team. Kylie Anderson received honorable mention.
