School District starts long-termplanning effort

With the arrival of strategic planning consultants Hagler & Associates, the Blaine County School District kicked off its latest "Strategic Planning Process" for the next eight to 10 years.

On Friday, Oct. 26, Kathy Hagler and Sally Anderson met with the Blaine County School District board of trustees to introduce the approach Hagler & Associates would take to help guide the district's latest planning cycle.

After reviewing their process, Hagler said in the first stage she and Anderson would work to help members of the board and the community, who choose to participate, to identify roles and responsibilities. The question was asked, "What will the school district look like in 10 years?"

To answer that question, Hagler asked for feedback from the board to identify its goals and concerns. They will do the same with a steering committee, a broad representation of between 50 to 60 parents, teachers, administrators (both district and school), board members, students and community patrons, including senior citizens.

Vice Chair Julie Dahlgren said the district's vision—to become a model school district—is important.

"As we continually strive to become a model school district, we need the help of our community, our staff, our students, and our patrons to push us towards that goal," said Dr. Lonnie Barber, assistant superintendent of the district.

"I am more nuts and bolts," said board member Kim Nilsen, who shared concerns about state funding and teaching students correct moral principles. Board Chair Alex Sundali said communication with the community was a key factor for the success of the planning process.

"This will help us to customize sessions," Anderson said, adding that many school districts and boards are considering a shift from the recent emphasis on accountability and tests as laid out in the No Child Left Behind Act.

The meeting on Friday was preparation for the district's first "strategic conversation with the community" that took place on Monday, Oct. 29, at Wood River Middle School, in Hailey. The meeting was a first gathering in an effort to form the steering committee that must be able to dedicate approximately six full days (and some homework time) over the next five months.

The goal of the initial meetings is to define a solid mission. Hagler emphasized that it is also important to maintain a flexible vision as the best way to establish a model school district.
