BAH to be held at chamber

The Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau invites members and guests to attend the October Business After Hours, hosted by the Sun Valley/Ketchum CVB in Ketchum. The BAH will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the chamber's offices, 371 N. Main St., above the Burger Grill. Businesses are encouraged to use this monthly event as an opportunity to network with other members, meet new businesses in town, and get better acquainted with the companies hosting the event.

Mountain Rides takes goblins for ride

Mountain Rides, Blaine County's public transportation provider, will offer free bus shuttles to and from the Nightmare on Main Street party in Ketchum Saturday, Oct. 27. Mountain Rides will have two trips from Bellevue and Hailey at the start of the evening, and two trips south at the end of the evening. The bus will pick up at Main and Oak, and Main and Spruce in Bellevue; and three spots in Hailey at Main and Maple, Park and Ride (Bullion & River), and Main and Myrtle. The northbound trips will leave Bellevue at 8:20 p.m. and 9:25 p.m., and Hailey at 8:30 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. Southbound trips will leave Ketchum at midnight and 1:05 a.m.

Help with fall clean-up

To do its part for the quality of life here in the Wood River Valley, the Environmental Resource Center has adopted a two-mile section of Highway 75 just north of Ketchum.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, the ERC will hold one last clean-up effort before winter sets in. There is space for five to 10 volunteers to pitch in for about 90 minutes cleaning up the roadside. Volunteers should meet at 4 p.m. at the Hulen Meadows pull-off about two miles north of the stoplight at Saddle Road.

Bring friends and family for a short and fun event that keeps the valley clean. To volunteer or for more information, call Kimberly or Dan at 726-4333.

Education boss to appear on TV

Tom Luna, the state of Idaho's superintendent of public instruction, will appear at 8:30 p.m. Thursday Oct. 25, on Idaho Public Television's talk show "Dialogue." The show will re-air at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28. Luna will discuss with host Marcia Franklin his first year on the job, the 2009 proposed budget and where Idaho public education is heading in the coming months.

Holiday lights no sooner than Nov. 1

Ketchum City Arborist Jennifer Smith is reminding residents and business owners in Ketchum that holiday lights may not be placed on public trees prior to Nov. 1.

Only Smith can grant exceptions for early placement. People who place lights prior to Nov. 1 are subject to a misdemeanor fine.

Additionally, all persons performing work on public trees, including those in city sidewalks, must hold a public tree permit. Permits must be renewed each year. Call Smith for information at 726-7820.

Crisis Hotline fundraiser set

The 15th annual fundraiser for the Crisis Hotline will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at the Ketchum Grill. The cost is $80 per person

The gourmet five-course meal includes wine, a raffle and live auction. Among the items to be auctioned are a case of assorted wines, a whitewater raft trip for four with lunch from The River Co., a Meadow Creek Inn gift certificate, an antique rug from Khyber Pass, gift certificates from CK's Real Food and Bigwood Theaters, and one night at the Galena Lodge.

Horse Board seeks grant applicants

The Idaho Horse Board is currently accepting grant requests for projects that benefit the state's horse industry in areas of education, research, or promotion.

The deadline for requests is Dec. 1. Awards will be announced in January. Past grants have been awarded for improving public horse facilities, educational programs, and assisting the funding of public television horse productions.

Dial 511 for driving conditions

The Idaho Transportation Department reminds travelers to prepare for inclement weather and bad driving conditions by checking the Idaho 511 Traveler Service Web site or calling 511 before embarking on a trip.

Travelers can log onto 511.Idaho.gov or call to access information 24 hours a day regarding road closures, highway and weather conditions, mountain passes, and the interstate highway system.

An ITD news release also noted that motorists are allowed to use studded tires on Idaho highways to improve handling though April 30.

Qwest offers teacher grants

Made possible by the Qwest Foundation, the Idaho state Department of Education is inviting K-12 teachers through the state to apply for $75,000 grants. The purpose of the grants being offered for the fourth year is to "fund innovative uses of technology in the classroom to improve student achievement." Over the past three years, more than 300 teachers have applied for the grants. The state Department of Education will send information directly to schools and teachers can find application forms online at http://www.sde.idaho.gov/techservices/.
