Unsung Heroes to be honored

There is an African proverb that says, "It takes a village to raise a child." The phrase was borrowed by former first lady Hillary Clinton as the title and theme of her best-selling book in 1996. Since then, the phrase has lost some of its power, but there is no denying its validity. Without a strong community—whether that is at school, within an extended family or in a religious organization—families have a much harder time raising children.

In partnership with the Community Drug Coalition, St. Luke's Center for Community Health will present its second annual Fall Conference, Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Community Campus in Hailey. The event begins with registration at 8:30 a.m.

The keynote speaker, Steven A. Maybell, will present a lecture called "Helping Kids Succeed in School and Life" at 9:30 a.m. Maybell holds a doctorate degree in counseling psychology from La Jolla University in California. He brings more than 30 years of experience in individual, couple and family counseling, as well as parent education. Currently, Maybell is the director of the Student Counseling Center and on the faculty of Seattle Pacific University and has a private therapy practice.

He has authored numerous journal articles and books, including "Raising Respectful Kids in a Rude World" and "Calming the Family Storm."

After Maybell's lecture, there will be a chance to thank your neighbors. As a special part of the conference, nine Unsung Hero Community Awards will be handed out at 11:45 a.m.

The Blaine County Teen Advisory Council and the Community Drug Coalition chose nominees for the awards. The St. Luke's Fall Conference Planning Committee made the final selections.
