What is the deal with boys and girls and why are parents (and relationship partners) so often confused when genders don't behave in a way we can understand?

To help answer these questions and more, The Community School will host renowned therapist and educator Michael Gurian, author of "The Minds of Boys & Girls," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25.

The talk will bring insight for teachers, parents and anyone raising or working with kids and adults, Gurian said during an interview with the Idaho Mountain Express while on the road in Alabama.

"It applies to all age groups. I illustrate using pet scans of the brain. The brains are very different. In the female brain there are more verbal centers and linkage between the verbal and the emotive centers. Females can connect their words and feelings to a much greater extent. The male brain is more involved in spatial mechanics. Males look more for pictures. It's not nurture versus nature. This is all over the world. We find this on all continents. It doesn't matter how you've been raised. We'll look at how this works in marriages for instance, and because we're at the Community School we'll look at the ramifications when you're trying to help your son or daughter in math class, for instance."

Gurian said that while it's true that males test out better at studies like geology and physics, in numerical tests they don't test out better than females.

"What I do is try to help every group," he said. "To help every person be who they are. We'll also look at chromosomal research and DNA research on gender. (The differences) are hard wired."

A social philosopher, family therapist, corporate consultant and co-founder of the Gurian Institute, he has taught at universities all over the country,

Gurian's 21 books have been translated into 20 languages and include the ground breaking works, "The Wonder Of Boys," "Boys And Girls Learn Differently!" "The Wonder of Girls" and "The Minds Of Boys."

Books will be available for purchase before and after the presentation.
