Halloween in Ketchum set

Ketchum Mayor Randy Hall officially proclaimed that Halloween 2007 will be celebrated in Ketchum on Saturday, Oct. 27. The event, called "Nightmare On Main Street," will feature live music, drink specials and a costume contest with extravagant prizes.

Main Street in Ketchum will be closed to all but pedestrian traffic from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, so that participants can enjoy a fun and safe street festival atmosphere.

A costume contest will be held at 11 p.m. on the Main Street outdoor stage. There will be prizes in three categories: Scariest, Best Group and Best in Show.

Walk for Alzheimer's

The second annual Wood River Alzheimer's Walk will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the north end of the St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center parking lot. The walk will begin at noon and will go approximately 2.5 miles north. Refreshments and transportation back to St. Luke's will be provided.

Local businessmen named honorary commanders

Jason Roth, principal broker at Roth Real Estate, and Hailey dentist Dr. Ron Fairfax have both been named as honorary commanders of the 366th Fighter Wing, stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base.

Roth and Fairfax, whose businesses are located in Hailey, were selected for the 2007-2008 year of the program, which pairs community leaders with the wing's leaders to forge new relationships.

The program is designed to increase public awareness and understanding of the mission, policies, and programs of the Air Force and increase community involvement with wing and individual squadron activities.

Jazz festival shuttle offered

In addition to regular Ketchum-Sun Valley town service, Mountain Rides will offer free bus shuttles for the Sun Valley Swing 'n' Dixie Jazz Jamboree this weekend.

Beginning today, Oct. 17, through Sunday, Oct. 21, festival participants can use the free shuttle. The bus will stop at the Baldy Bus Loop in Sun Valley Village and at River Run parking lot. Frequent shuttles will follow performance times accordingly.

Museum to hold annual meeting

The Ketchum-Sun Valley Historical Society Heritage & Ski Museum will host its annual member's meeting from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30.

There will be a wine and cheese reception held in the ski museum for members to chat informally with the executive director and members of the board of directors about the state of the society and museum, as well as its plans for the future.

$15,000 donated to foundation

At the Kick Ash Bash, Greg Bloomfield, of Wood River Insurance in Hailey, presented a $15,000 check to the Boise-based Wildland Firefighter Foundation on behalf of Safeco.

Bloomfield, an agent for the insurance company Safeco, nominated the firefighter foundation for a grant through Safeco's Agent Giving Program, which supports nonprofit organizations that provide relief assistance to individuals and communities affected by natural disasters.

The Wildland Firefighter Foundation supports injured firefighters and the families of firefighter killed in the line of duty.

Meeting set to discuss SNRA

The future of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area will be the focus of a community meeting hosted by the Sawtooth Society and the Sawtooth National Forest next week. The open-house gathering, scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, will be held at the Smiley Creek Lodge in the Sawtooth Valley north of Galena Summit.

During the public open house, updated information will be provided on "Sawtooth Vision 20/20: Shared Strategies for the Future of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area." The strategy was developed last year during a series of facilitated workshops.

Discussions during Thursday's meeting will center on five critical areas: economic and community stability, fish and wildlife, historic, pastoral and scenic values, natural and sustainable ecosystems, and recreation.
