Runners ready to lace ?em up for district meets


In the final meet of the regular season, Wood River and Community School pacers hit the golf course at the Gooding Invitational on October 9.

Bolstered by a sixth-place finish by Julia Bowman, the Wood River girls placed second in the team standings behind 5A Twin Falls. The Wolverine boys ran to third behind the Bruins and Burley.

In the 5k-varsity girls' race, Bowman crossed the line in 21:04. Brooke Bowers finished 14th in 22:32. Rosie Gilcrest (22:50) was 19th. Heidi Bergt (25-23:19) and Lacie Anderson (34-24:05) rounded out Hailey's top five, finishing in the top 34 in a field of 98. Also competing for the Wolverines were Maddie Cordovano (36-24:12), Ali Freund (45-24:44), Maya Diem (49-24:55), Clarice Stevens (61-25:50), Tessa Barrow (74-27:46), Tanya Greenwood (75-27:50), Dezi Peters (78-29:04), Ashton Lupton (82-29:47) and Lyndsey Laschek (83-29:52).

Top Cutthroats were Bronwen Raff in 35th place in 24:10, and Emily Williams in 53rd in 25:16.

Sophomore Chase Caulkins was the top Wolverine boy in ninth place with a time of 17:35. Pedro Morales was 17 seconds behind Caulkins to finish 11th in 17:52. Zach Lowery was 35th in 19:22 with James Mark (19:34) in 38th, Dale McLaughlin (19:56) 46th, and Greg LeBlanc (20:09) 50th in a field of 74 varsity boys.

The Cutthroats were short one boy to qualify in the team standings, but had some fine results with Max Durtschi (18:28) 18th, Sam Farnham (18:32) 20th, Sean Dumke (19:43) 40th and Scotty Phelan (20:39) 54th.

Meet winners were Burley's Taylor Bean in 16:39, and Amanda Ward of Twin Falls in 19:16.

Both local schools will compete in their respective district meets at Albion on Thursday, October 18. Wood River will vie for state in the seven-team Great Basin Conference meet. The Community School will run in the Fourth District 3A/2A finals.

In each district final, the top half of finishing teams qualifies for state and the top third of individual runners. The Wood River girls are the defending Great Basin district champion. State finals will be held in Idaho Falls on October 27.
