The Carey High School Panthers paid tribute to their seniors with a 3-0 volleyball victory over Dietrich in Carey Tuesday evening.

The victory, which improves the Panthers' seeding for the upcoming 1A Northside Conference tournament, was also important because it came on Senior Night.

The Panther's smoked the Blue Devils with match wins of 25-22, 27-25, 25-7. Chelsey Hunt led the Carey scoring effort with nine kills.

"Last night they really played well," said Panther JV coach Dick Simpson. "We're more consistent now, maybe we're getting on track."

The victory came on the heels of a late scheduled home match Monday against Lighthouse Christian Academy of Twin Falls. The Panthers fell 2-0 in set losses of 25-23, 25-18.

The Carey varsity squad is now 6-14 overall and 4-5 in league play.

The Panthers played their final season match Thursday at Shoshone. Northside Conference play will wrap up this week to determine seedings for the tournament, which starts Monday at 2 p.m. at Dietrich.

Carey JV wins again

The Carey junior varsity squad continued its winning ways with a 2-0 victory Monday over Lighthouse Christian.

With set wins of 25-20, 25-21, the Carey JV improved its season record to 16-3. The Panthers are 7-1 in league play, which puts them in driver's seat for top seeding at the JV Northside Conference tournament that starts at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fairfield at Camas County High School.

The junior varsity squad played its final season and league match Thursday in Shoshone. Games this week will determine final seeding for the tournament.

The Panther JV didn't play Tuesday against Dietrich because the Blue Devils don't have a junior varsity squad.

Wolverines nip Bobcats 3-2

The Wood River High School varsity squad bested the league-leading Burley Bobcats 3-2 in volleyball play Tuesday on the Bobcats' home court.

Strong play late in the match capped the Wolverine victory. Wood River took the first set 25-18 but fell to the Bobcats in the following two 22-25 and 11-25. Set four was close with the Wolverines coming out on top 25-18. But Wood River owned the final and deciding set, smashing the Bobcats 15-3.

The victory boosted Wood River's league record to 4-2 (14-9-2 overall), still not quite good enough for top seeding at the upcoming Great Basin Conference West tournament. Burley still owns the top spot with a 5-1 league record and gets to play host.

Wood River hosted its final season game at Senior Night Thursday against Skyline.

Tournament play starts Monday. Wood River clashes in the first round with #3 seeded Jerome while Burley takes on #4 seeded Minico. Game time for both matches is 5 p.m. Tournament play concludes on Tuesday.
