Last week we went to see "No Way Out," a searing, heart-breaking and, I fear, truthful documentary about the Iraq war. We had the cinema to ourselves and the young man selling tickets said few people had been to see it. On Friday we went to listen to two gentle, good people and watch a slide-show describing their recent two-week visit to Iran, and their encounters with Iranian people, (cultured, hospitable, educated).
We left the library appalled at the thought—the possibility?—of American bombers and rockets raining down Iraq-style death and destruction on that ancient and beautiful land. Now I have just read Naomi Klein's brilliant article in Harpers magazine describing what she calls "Disaster Capitalism," and I am plunged into even deeper despair. The very idea that corporations such as Lockheed, Exxon, GE and Halliburton are in favor of everlasting war (and even natural disasters such as Katrina) because they swell their already obscene profits is a nightmare of Orwellian proportions.
What will it take to wake up the good and honorable American people to the crimes being committed in their names?
