Assertion ridiculous

Richard Hood's divisive letter to the editor from the Sept. 5 Mountain Express certainly deserves a response.

To ridiculously assert that 90 percent of the crimes in this valley are committed by Hispanics is an outrage. I have to wonder why Mr. Hood has to especially keep track of Spanish-sounding surnames in the News of Record in order to promote his skewed perception. This "keeping track" is very important to him or he wouldn't have mentioned it. Obviously, all nationalities have a criminal element, but to blame one group for the vast majority of crimes in this valley is ludicrous and racist.

Just as individuals face challenges, so do new arrivals to our country. American history is full of examples where the "newcomers" to our country were often blamed for just about everything and anything. Somehow, most of these immigrants persevered and strove to be ideal American citizens, adding to our great nation's culture, knowledge and traditions.

Most of our Hispanic friends and neighbors are a valuable and contributing part of our society. Mr. Hood, your powers of observation need some refocusing, and it is disappointing, yet clear, that you did not learn your lessons in Texas on how to view crime. We need positive messages and voices, not irresponsible putdowns, to help build bridges between the many diverse communities that call this valley their home.
