Wood River hosts varsity volleyball invitational

Tourney follows Wolverine victories over Twin Falls and Gooding

Reeling from heady victories earlier this week over Twin Falls and Gooding, the Wood River High School varsity volleyball squad prepares to host the 27 Wood River Invitational varsity volleyball tournament starting this afternoon.

Play begins today at 4:30 p.m. and continues through Saturday with matches starting at 8:30 a.m at the Wood River High School gymnasium.

In addition to the Wolverines, nine other southern Idaho teams are expected for the tournament. Teams invited to play are Hillcrest of Idaho Falls, Filer, Boise, Blackfoot, Centennial of Boise, Rigby, Century of Pocatello, Idaho Falls and Mountain Home.

The 4-1 Wolverines enter the tournament on a high note after victories over Twin Falls and Gooding at a tri-meet in Twin Falls on Tuesday.

Wood River beat the Bruins 26-24, 18-25, 16-14. The match was followed up by 25-19, 25-23 wins over the Gooding Senators.

Twin Falls defeated Gooding 25-14, 25-19.

Cutthroats fall to Shoshone

The Community School volleyball squad dropped one game below 500 in a fiercely fought match Tuesday in Shoshone.

It took five sets for Northside Conference rival Shoshone to ward off the Cutthroats, but the Indians did it 17-25, 25-15, 25-13, 18-25, 15-12.

The loss dropped the Cutthroats, who are looking for their first winning season in six years, to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The Community School spikers play their next match Monday, Sept. 17, in Fairfield against league rivals the Camas County Mushers. Junior varsity action starts at 6 p.m. and varsity play commences at 7:30 p.m.

Richfield sweeps Carey tri-meet

The Richfield Tigers took top honors at a volleyball tri-meet Tuesday at Carey High School.

The Tigers defeated both the Panthers and Glenns Ferry to sweep the meet. The Carey girls didn't come away empty-handed with a victory over Glenns Ferry.

Richfield's win over Carey, a Northside Conference league game, came in three sets: 25-13, 25-17, 25-16. The Tigers dropped Glenns Ferry in a two-set match 25-22, 25-11.

Carey's win over Glenn's Ferry came in three sets: 16-25, 25-19, 15-5.

The win and loss adjusted Carey's season record to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in league play.

The Panthers played Thursday evening in league action at Dietrich. Tuesday, Sept. 18, Carey hosts Wendell and Shoshone in another tri-meet. Play starts at 5 p.m.
