Oh, the irony

Fifteen years ago my husband and I endured the L.A. riots. The skies were full of smoke, our cars were covered in ash, helicopters droned from above and the National Guard arrived. It was a major turning point in making our decision to move here.

Well, last May came the floods (we live near the river), and this year came Aug. 16.

You can imagine the flashback feelings the Castle Rock Fire evoked in us. Of course there are obvious differences, but the emotional experience is actually quite the same.

So, as our skies here filled with smoke and our cars were covered in ash, as the helicopters droned and the National Guard arrived, I couldn't help but think of this one line. It kept repeating in my mind. Its absurd truth made me smile: "Wherever you go—there you are."
