Sun Valley begins new trash collection program

Residents need to specify trash collection plan by Sept. 21

The city of Sun Valley, in conjunction with Ketchum-based Clear Creek Disposal, has begun implementing a plan to reduce city refuse by charging residents on a sliding scale for the amount of trash they generate.

The plan is part of a Comprehensive Solid Waste Reduction and Recyclable Materials Collection Agreement. It becomes effective Oct. 1, 2007, and mailers are now being sent to all Sun Valley residents. Recipients must return the mailers to Clear Creek Disposal no later than Friday, Sept. 21, announcing which size trashcan each home intends to use. Residents can also register their trashcan-size request online at ccdisposal.com.

Trashcans are available in three sizes for three different prices. The small, single-family trashcan is 32 gallons and costs $17 per month. The mid-sized 69-gallon bin costs $25 per month. The large 95-gallon bin costs $38 per month. Residents who fail to file requests by Friday will automatically be given the largest and most expensive trashcan. Bills will be issued by Clear Creek Disposal to single-family homes on a quarterly basis.

The most substantial change, aside from the sliding fee scale, is the encouraged use of six blue recycling bins. Each bin will be labeled with one of six acceptable recycling materials and residents will be asked to sort accordingly. Container orders and recycling services are free.

In addition, two 24-hour recycling centers will be set up at Sun Valley City Hall and at Elkhorn Fire Station. Acceptable materials can be dropped off anytime and corrugated cardboard will also be accepted at recycling centers.

During the month of November, phone books as well will be accepted at recycling centers. And for two weeks after Christmas, Clear Creek Disposal will pick up Christmas trees, free of charge, from Sun Valley residents.
