A report of a man threatening campers with a gun led to a massive police response Friday afternoon at Alturas Lake north of Ketchum.

No gun was found, but the man accused of making the threats pleaded guilty Monday to three misdemeanor charges and was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Ryan Glen Kempany, who court records listed at age 58, pleaded guilty Monday afternoon in Blaine County Magistrate Court to giving false information to police, obstructing and delaying officers and disturbing the peace. He remained in jail Monday with 87 more days to serve of his 90-day sentence.

Blaine County Sheriff's Lt. Ron Taylor said at least 10 officers from Blaine and Custer counties descended on Alturas Lake shortly after 12 noon after campers complained that Kempany said he had a gun and was threatening to shoot people.

Ketchum Fire Department dispatched an ambulance to Alturas Lake as a precautionary measure. No one was injured, but Kempany was located and placed under arrest.

"We heard him screaming and shouting obscenities and that's how we found him," Taylor said.

The lieutenant said Kempany was apparently camping illegally in the area and became involved in a verbal altercation with other campers.

"It turned out he did not have a gun," Taylor said.

The lieutenant said Kempany was uncooperative in providing officers with information, including his age and where he lives. Taylor said Kempany may be from Chicago.

Alturas Lake is about 37 miles north of Ketchum near the boundary of Blaine and Custer counties.
