Blaine County second to one

According to a recent study done by Money magazine, Blaine County ranked second for the skinniest residents in the nation.

Calculated from counties' data on body mass index, a figure that takes into account a person's weight relative to height, the study found that only Marin County, located just north of San Francisco, had a lower average than Blaine County. Teton County, Wyo., ranked fourth.

Since obesity has come to the forefront of national attention, the body mass index has become a quick and popular method of measuring "thinness" or "fatness." To calculate in U.S. units (rather than metric), divide weight by the square of height in inches, then multiply by 703. A "normal" result is between 18.5 and 25, and Blaine County's average was 24.59, compared to Marin's 24.14.

Evacuation center back in business

The Community Campus in Hailey, which had been placed on stand-by as an evacuation shelter for victims of the Castle Rock Fire, was back in business Tuesday afternoon after a mandatory evacuation was ordered for the Warm Springs area of Ketchum.

"We are up and running and ready and waiting," said shelter manager Bettyann Mummert. Authorities told her "to expect a lot" of people, she said.

The shelter at 1050 Fox Acres Road first re-opened on Saturday night, Aug. 25, after mandatory evacuations were ordered for parts of the mid-valley.

"The shelter will be available throughout the whole fire," she said.
