The Waxroom Snappers, trying to nail down their fourth Sun Valley Adult Men's Baseball League "World Series" title in the 12 seasons of local men's hardball, got a leg up on the Wise Guy Dirtbags Saturday at Founders Field in Hailey.

Snappers righthander Nic Nottingham, a Wood River Valley product, scattered nine hits and enticed a slew of ground balls as Waxroom (9-3) captured the first game of the best-of-three wood bat "World Series" 6-2 over the Dirtbags (6-6).

Nottingham (6 K, 0 BB) threw a complete game for the regular-season champ Snappers and enjoyed a little more run-scoring support than Dirtbags righty Gio Tognoni (8 hits, 10 K, 2 BB). The quickly played game was scoreless through five frames.

In the sixth Waxroom struck for three runs ignited by a leadoff single by second baseman Jeff Poggi (2 hits). Nottingham followed with an RBI single, Dan Freeman worked a two-out walk, Anthony Anderson (2 hits) singled and Brent Anderson cracked a two-run double.

The Snappers added a single run in the seventh for a 4-1 lead on a single by shortstop Rich Cortez and RBI single by Poggi. Anthony Anderson's long RBI double to the center field fence was the big blow in a two-run eighth for a 6-1 cushion.

For the Dirtbags Chris Cook ripped three hits including a double, Brian Nelson had two hits and so did Hoss Schmidt (double).

Sunday's mid-valley evacuations because of the Castle Rock fire caused the postponement of the final game of the "World Series."

League commissioner Curtis Bacca has rescheduled the deciding game for either Sunday, Sept. 9 or Sunday, Sept. 16, depending on the fire conditions in the valley.

The deciding game is expected to be a match-up of pitchers Nottingham and Dirtbags ace righthander Christian Nickum.
