Ali Butler, 17, a Wood River High School senior, won her gold competing at the Senior level, the highest competitive level in the Dramatic Showcase or ?Artistic? event.

Ali Butler, 17, a Wood River High School senior, took top honors at the U.S. Figure Skating 2007 National Showcase Competition held in Fort Collins, Colo. Aug. 9-11.

Butler, who began skating at the age of eight, added a national title to a long list of figure skating achievements. She has won many local and regional figure skating contests.

Ali has passed both the USFSA Senior Moves and Senior Freeskating tests. She performs every Saturday night as a member of the ensemble cast of the Sun Valley Ice Shows.

Over 200 competitors from 35 states participated in the U.S. 2007 National Showcase competition. Each athlete had to qualify with a top-four placing in the prior 12 months.

The competition focuses on the artistic and theatrical side of figure skating. Ali won her gold competing at the Senior level, the highest competitive level in the Dramatic Showcase or "Artistic" event. She received praise for skating two flawless performances.

Competing at the Novice level, 14-year-old Julianna Lamb, took home a silver medal in the Novice Light event, a bronze in Extemporaneous and sixth place in the Dramatic Showcase event.

Lamb and Butler also won bronze in the Senior pairs category. Julianna, a Community School freshman, won gold last year at the Intermediate level during the 2006 National Showcase competition.

Butler and Lamb are the only two skaters in Idaho holding these US Figure Skating national titles. Both skaters are Sun Valley Figure Skating Club members who train locally with coaches Holly Wheeler and Gia Guddat.
