Clean roads start with you

I have read the private advertisement, titled "Sun Valley's Shame Litter, Litter, Litter ... " by Mr. Holloway in the Aug. 1 newspaper.

I am shocked that Mr. Holloway blames Sun Valley Mayor Jon Thorson and other elected representatives for the litter along our roads. His frustrations are better directed at those who trash our highways. It should be up to Blaine County citizens not to litter and to clean up the roads.

Mr. Holloway states that "Elkhorn Road is semi-clean because I and others are always picking up trash." I applaud Mr. Holloway for picking up trash, and his statement ironically shows that people are willing to make a difference.

The Adopt-a-Highway program was created to help clean up roads, and if a section of road isn't "pristine" local citizens should adopt it. Mr. Holloway asked us to "pick up your cell phone and call someone about this disgusting situation," but shouldn't we be picking up garbage bags instead of our phones?

Using the government as a scapegoat isn't going to change anything. When people have the initiative to get up and fix the problem themselves, Batman can stay in Gotham City, and he is not needed to pick up trash. Mr. Holloway's desire to have clean roads is one I admire, but giving his own phone number to ask for citizen help would have been more appropriate.
