Fishing Report

by Bill Mason

Fishing has been holding up quite nicely and that's a surprise, considering the low water and warm air temperatures. I've been waiting for a letdown and it just hasn't materialized. Fish are active on and below the surface. Since the temperatures are expected to cool off a bit, I don't see our fishing conditions changing in the near future. In general, not much has changed since my last report so let's review what you can expect to find this week on our waters.

SILVER CREEK—Same old story. Trico and Beatis are the main hatches on the stream. Trico can be a bit inconsistent but a Dave's Trico Spinner #22 and a Mason Quill Spinner #22 will take fish when each of these mayflys are on the water. We've had some strong success using Blue Damsel Fly's in the late morning, into the afternoon. Evenings have seen Beatis duns emerge. A Para Beatis #22 seems to work nicely.

BIG WOOD RIVER—I can make it short and sweet. Not much change here other than my predictions of Trico appearing on the lower Wood actually came to be. A Para Adams #20 seems to work well when Trico appears. A Yellow Para Adams #18 has been deadly moving all sizes of fish on the surface. Copper Johns #14 moves fish under the surface.

BIG LOST—Higher then I'd like to see but it's manageable to fish. Trico is there but with this much water, the hatch gets lost except for a very few places. Prince Nymphs #12, San Juan Worms #12 and Copper Johns #12 always take fish sub-surface. Crane Flys and Para Adams #16 will work in the afternoon, on top.

WARM SPRINGS/TRAIL CREEK—Water levels are very low in both streams. What fish we are catching are quite small.

PENNY LAKE/LAKE CREEK—Planted weekly, great places to take smaller children.
