Swimmers take final shot on the long course

SV5B kids do well at Snake River finals


SV5B swimming ace Racheal McGinnis, 16, holds the prestigious Daniel Dewey Award for sportsmanship, leadership and respect for others. She is competing this week in Western Zones in New Mexico.

Beating the 100-degree heat and the competition were SV5B swimmers in Twin Falls July 27-29 competing in the Snake River Summer Championships. It was the final long course meet of the summer season.

SV5B gold medal winners were Kaedi Fry, 10, 50 breast; Lena Friesen, 12, in 100 free; Forrest Davis, 12, 100 and 200 breast; and Racheal McGinnis, 16, in 200 free.

Silver medalists were Racheal McGinnis, 50 and 100 free and 200 IM; Lena Friesen, 400 free;

Forrest Davis, 200 IM and 400 free; Samantha Sutton, 10, 100 fly and 200 free; Sarah Brown, 14, 200 fly; and Kaedi Fry, 50 and 100 back.

Rounding out top three for bronze were Kaedi Fry, 100 fly and 100 breast; Forrest Davis, 50 breast, 100 back and 100 fly; Sean Sutton, 14, 100 free; Megan Hayes, 16, 100 fly; Sam Sutton, 200 IM and 50 free.

Coach Brian Gallagher said, "We've been swimming 6,000 to 7,000 yards each morning throughout the summer and the results showed in their swims this weekend.

"We rested and tapered and the kids had extremely good swims. Across the board we've had good races throughout the summer season and we were rewarded. With the number of talented young swimmers who have joined the team, the future looks bright for this SV5B program."

The Pocatello Swim Team (1143 points) won the 13-team meet over the Boise YMCA Swim Team (1009) while SV5B finished seventh with 345 points in the final rankings.

Special awards and results

Snake River Swimming Awards were also presented during the three-day meet staged at July 27-29 at the Twin Falls YMCA City Pool.

Racheal McGinnis was awarded the prestigious Daniel Dewey Award for sportsmanship, leadership and respect for others.

Scholastic Achievement Awards were presented to swimmers who have completed the ninth grade, maintained a 3.5 cumulative GPA, competed in at least three Snake River Swim meets, and are members of USA Swimming.

SV5B athletes honored by scholastic awards were Racheal McGinnis, Megan Hayes, Ashleigh Share, Michael Coiner, Taylor Coiner, Natalie Hague, Lacey Werley, Jon Atkinson, Taylor Straley, Rian Ervin, Melissa Becker, and Sophie Nosworthy.

Looking ahead, the Western Zones competition are Aug. 7-11 in Farmington, N.M. Racheal McGinnis will represent SV5B on the Snake River Swimming Team. She qualified to compete in 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 200 back and will also fill a spot on relays in New Mexico.

In other news, Wood River Middle School seventh-grader Forrest Davis returned in mid-July from a swimming camp at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He was the only Idaho swimmer at a five-day, 150-swimmer camp that featured appearances by Olympic gold medalists.

Here are SV5B results from the Snake River Summer Championships.

Each of the three days consisted of preliminaries in the morning, followed by finals through eighth place late in the afternoon. Top fifteen finishes were as follows:

4—Lacey Werley, 17, 50 back; Hayes, 50 fly; K. Fry, 100 free and 200 IM; Sam. Sutton, 50 and 100 breast; Friesen, 50 breast, 100 breast and 200 free; Brown, 400 IM; and Sean Sutton, 200 back.

5—Brown, 400 free; McGinnis, 100 back; Sean Sutton, 100 breast; Hayes, 200 back; and JT Sutton, 14, 50 free.

6—Hayes, 100 free and 200 IM; JT Sutton, 100 fly; Brown, 200 free; and Friesen, 200 IM and 50 free.

7—Tori Emerick, 13, 100 free; JT Sutton, 100 free, 400 IM and 200 IM; Sean Sutton, 200 breast; and Brown, 200 IM and 100 fly.

8—Jon Atkinson, 15, 50 free and 200 free; Travis Flynt, 9, 50 free; JT Sutton, 200 free; Colby Werley, 12, 200 free; Sean Sutton, 200 IM; and Hayes, 100 back.

15—Williams, 100 free; Pennington, 200 IM; C. Werley, 200 IM; and Kelsey Syms, 11, 100 back.

Other best place finishes were: Loni Unser, 9, 17th 50 breast; Mollie Milgard, 17th 100 free; Madison Milgard, 10, 21st 100 free; L. Werley, 16th 100 free; Share, 17th 200 free; Bates, 16th 100 breast and 50 fly; and K. Syms, 18th 200 free.

In girls' relay team results, the foursome of Bates, Sam. Sutton, K. Fry and C. Werley placed third in the 12-under 400 free relay; Friesen, K. Fry, Sam. Sutton and C. Werley were third in the 12-under 200 medley relay; while Bates, K. Fry, Syms and Sam. Sutton finished third in the 12-under 200 free relay.

The foursome of Emerick, Brown, E. Fry and Friesen placed second in the 14-under 200 free relay.

In boys' relay team results, the foursome of Davis, Atkinson, Sutton & Sutton were seventh in the 19-under 200 medley relay, and sixth in the 19-under 200 free relay.
