West Nile creeps closer to home

A Custer County woman, a Twin Falls woman—both over 60—and a Gem County girl all tested positive for West Nile virus in late July, the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare announced this week.

All three women are recovering. Their cases bring the 2007 cases in Idaho to 11 this season.

Custer County is directly to the north of Blaine County. Gem County is to the west of Boise.

Headaches, body aches and a mild fever are some of the symptoms people may experience. In 2006, 250 residents were hospitalized with West Nile.

West Nile is spread by mosquito bites. Reducing standing water is one way to protect against bites. The virus does not affect most animals, including cats and dogs. Horses and some birds may become severely ill if exposed.

Downtown office-residence building approved

With minor design modifications from an earlier plan, a four-story, 60,084 square-foot residential-office building was approved on Monday for downtown Ketchum.

Redhawk Landing at 111 East Ave. was approved in a motion at a special meeting of the Ketchum Planning and Zoning Commission.

Changes included modifying and reducing the height of the mansard roof to 48 feet. A mansard roof, named after a French architect, consists of a roof with two slopes on each of four sides with the lower part being steeper than the upper.

The historic McCoy-Gooding house, located on the property, would be relocated before construction begins, city planning documents said. Another building and a shed on the property will be demolished, and a demolition permit is needed.

'Make A Difference'

Check out the Make A Difference Yard Sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3 and 4, at 40 Buttercup Road in Hailey.

It will be hosted by Hailey resident Theresa Grant, who works with orphans through the Courage To Be You organization. Courage To Be You helps with income-generating projects and educational programs to make sure the basic needs of children who are sick or have been abandoned due to illnesses such as AIDS, TB and malaria are met. Grant is holding it for the children she helps in Africa.

"I am trying to continue to pay for 22 more children in Tanzania to go to school," she said. "I am also trying to help two twin babies and their mother get out of a poor village where they have no access to food or water, and live with their aunt at the orphanage near Kilimanjaro."

Children can help by selling cookies or lemonade for the children.

For more information, contact Grant at theresa@couragetobeyou.org.
