Don?t trash the Earth

We could all do well to heed this useful reminder about preserving our environment. It comes from the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Fla. For hard evidence that Mother Nature can't be counted on to clean up after us, consider the following decomposition rates for these common items:

· Paper towel: four weeks.

· Cardboard box: eight weeks.

· Styrofoam cup: 50 years.

· Aluminum can: 200 years.

· Plastic bottle: 450 years.

· Monofilament (fishing) line: 600 years.

Please think about these figures the next time you are tempted to casually discard trash into the great outdoors. You'll be doing your Earth a great favor.
