Use water cautiously

I wish to underscore the water crisis that has gripped virtually our entire valley and ask people, particularly those in Hailey, to be extra careful about their water use. As was explained in last week's Express, the city of Hailey cannot replenish its water tank. Despite metering, hefty fees and watering restrictions (many of which are being ignored), the tank is being depleted faster than it can be filled. If this situation persists, it is not only a danger but could prove extremely costly for taxpayers to the tune of millions of tax dollars to expand infrastructure and future maintenance on that infrastructure.

Fortunately, all this can be avoided with some prudent water sense. Studies have shown that most lawns only need to be watered three to four days a week to stay healthy and green. Watering too frequently creates shallow roots instead of healthier, deeper roots. Be sure to water in the early mornings when evaporative loss is low. Take a few moments and check your watering schedule this week. Doing so can save you a lot cash this month and even more money for you and the entire community down the line.

For more information please go to the city of Hailey's Web site or call the Environmental Resource Center at 726-4333.
