Harry Frank Ooms

Harry Frank Ooms, 52, passed away in his sleep with his wife, Susan, and friends nearby on July 16, 2007, after a rapid battle with cancer. Harry was born in Eindhoven, Holland, immigrated to the U.S. in 1957 with his parents, Bertus and Maria, and spent most of his childhood in Coventry, Conn.

He was a gifted athlete with a passion for diving, mechanics, auto racing and aeronautics. After receiving his Education degree in 1977 from University of Connecticut, he attended Commercial Diving Center in Los Angeles. Harry was a 28-year veteran of the offshore oil industry and worked worldwide as a diver, consultant and fabricator. His many innovations and intuitions were an asset to all phases of his life and an inspiration to many. He loved the outdoors and was a proficient hunter, fisherman, photographer and conservationist. Harry's passion for flying led him to become a member of the EAA, a superb pilot and builder of aircraft. He was a staunch supporter of our Second Amendment rights, a lifetime member of the NRA and marksman extraordinaire.

Harry was extremely compassionate and went out of his way to support and protect his fellow man. He was an extensive reader and always ready to pass his knowledge on to anyone in need. Fondly referred to as "gear-head," his avid interest was in Triumph motorcycles and cars. His passion for all will be greatly missed.

He is survived by wife Susan Scott Ooms, brother John & wife Tara, nephew and niece Kjell & Madora of Hailey, Idaho, in-laws Alden & Shirley Scott of Metairie, La., extended family, and many true friends.

Memorial services will be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Rifle Association, American Cancer Society or local Hospice.
