Some crowded airspace at Atkinson Park

Week Four of Ultimate Frisbee

Frisbees and paragliders competed for airspace last Thursday as the Ketchum Ultimate Frisbee League continued round robin play on the upper fields of Atkinson Park.

While the young men and women in their flying machines floated down from the top of Baldy, with one actually landing nearby on the Ketchum Little League baseball field, it was KB's vs. Board Bin on Field One and WrapCity vs. Grumpy's on Field Two.

On Field One, Board Bin (3-1) took a quick lead of 3-0 thanks to Cody Quickshanks who sprinted into the end zone to catch all three scores.

KB's (2-2) never quite recovered from this deficit and trailed for the rest of the game, but not without a battle.

Because of an uneven number of women on the teams, Sage Pressman of KB's had to cover a male Board Bin player for the duration game.

You might think, hmmm, that does not sound quite fair. But no, it was more like, hmmm, too bad for that poor male Board Bin player!

Getting free at whim and throwing like a champion, Sage was the Billie Jean King of Ultimate Frisbee Thursday night. The Bobby Riggs of Board Bin shall remain nameless.

The crowd also went wild when Chaka John Schenk of KB's executed what must have been his one-thousandth perfect ho-d, which is short for horizontal defensive move.

Not only did Chaka prove that you do not need a parachute to fly, he also stopped Board Bin from scoring what had until a split second before looked like an easy point.

But such spectacular play by the KB's squad could not stop Board Bin's overall smooth offense and tight defense. Led by Mike Ausman and Dave Marsala, Board Bin eventually sealed the deal, winning 15-9.

The contest on Field Two between WrapCity (2-2) and Grumpy's (1-3) was also marked by some exciting plays.

Todd Dunham of WrapCity sent onlookers into a frenzy when he scored the rare and elusive Callahan goal. A Callahan takes place when a defender not only intercepts a pass thrown by the offense but also lands in the opponent's end zone, scoring a goal.

Other highlights included layout catches by Craig Morgan of WrapCity and Gretchen Mallet of Grumpy's as well as crucial end zone defensive blocks by Graham Unger of Grumpy's.

Despite impending darkness and dropping temperatures, the competition became more and more heated as the teams traded points. Finally, with the huge waxing moon as the only source of light, Grumpy's won the rock and sock battle, 15-11.

All players welcome to join the fun, beginners too. Call Scott at 788-1183 or just show up on Thursdays at 7 p.m. and you'll be put on a team.

On Thursday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m., Board Bin plays WrapCity and Grumpy's clashes with KB's. Then the final regular-season games are Aug. 9.
