Nine junior bicycle racers representing the Ketchum-based Sun Summit Cycling Club competed last week during the fourth annual Tour of Idaho BYRDS Junior Stage Race staged July 26-29 in the hot Treasure Valley near Boise.
Winning the Junior Men's 13-14 age class in the cumulative stage race standings after two days was Davis Hague with a total time of 1.34:59 covering three stages—Saturday's four-mile individual hill climb in Boise plus the National Guard circuit race, and Sunday's Eagle River criterium in Eagle.
The older cyclists had a more challenging regimen of five stages over four days. Sun Summit's Max Durtschi came within less than a second of the top spot in the cumulative standings. He finished second overall with a total time of 3.34:38.
Older cyclists in the 15-18 classes started with Thursday's 2.5-mile prologue TT plus Friday's 50-mile (ages 15-16) and 65-mile (17-18) road races. They ended with Saturday's four-mile hill climb/ circuit race, and Sunday's criterium.

Junior Men 17-18 (4 days, 5 stages): 10—Colton Osterhout 5:32.47 including third place in the circuit race.
Junior Men 15-16 (4 days, 5 stages): 2—Max Durtschi 3:34.38. 8—Matt Kazanovics 3:47.05 including second place in Sunday's Eagle River criterium. 11—Taylor Benz 3:48.40. 15—Jimmy Hague 4:02.57. 18—Colby Benz 4:09.26.
