Fishing Report

by Bill Mason

Despite the low water, fishing has remained good although you do have to work a little harder to find the better fish. It is not terribly easy out there and I suspect it will get more difficult. Small flies, light leaders and precise casts are the order of the day whether you like it or not. Let's have a look at what's going on.

SILVER CREEK—Still fishing nicely with Trico and Beatis but both hatches get more and more inconsistent with each passing day. The clouds of spinners appear but whether they fall to the water and how long they last are always big questions. A Dave's Trico Spinner #22 and Mason Quill Beatis Spinner #22 will take fish. Afternoons have been tough with some Callibeatis being seen and some success is had using Ants, Beatles and Blue Damsels, but that's about it.

BIG WOOD RIVER—Has continued to produce but you have to go underneath to find the better fish. A variety of flies will move fish but size is very important. Para Adams #18-20, Para Hares Ear #18 and Cuttwing PMD's #18 work well. The Yellow Parachute Adams #16-20 seem to be the most consistent. Zebra and Copper Johns #12-14 work very well sub-surface for the better fish. Although we have yet to see Trico, it's my guess that it's right around the corner and could be seen this week.

BIG LOST—The river has dropped enough to make fishing the waters much more accessible for more anglers, You will find some feeding fish and a Parachute Adams #14-16 have taken fish but the greatest success still comes from fishing Copper Johns and Prince Nymphs #10-12. Afternoons have provided some exciting fishing using Crane Flies. If the water continues to drop, Trico will come into the picture. It's a dandy hatch on this river. We have also had some great reports about Copper Basin with Brook Trou, Rainbows and some nice sized Cutthroat being taken in some nice quantities. Standard Patterns seem to work well.

WARM SPRINGS/TRAIL CREEK—Both streams are quite low. The fish we're finding are small. Not my first choice to cast a fly.

PENNY LAKE/LAKE CREEK—Planted regularly. Still a great place to take young kids.
