Extra patrols on the watch during holiday week

The Sun Valley Police Department will be extra vigilant for the week of the Fourth of July holiday to guard the public against intoxicated drivers.

"Impaired driving protection patrols" will be out in force, said Assistant Police Chief Mike Crawford.

The Police Department is assisted in its crusade against drunk drivers by a federal grant administered by the Idaho Transportation Department.

"Nationwide, impaired drivers make the summer holiday one of the deadliest holiday periods of the year," said Kevin Bechen, of ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety. "Impaired driving is no accident, nor is it victimless," he said. "Alcohol, drugs and driving just don't mix."

A joint news release issued by ITD and the Sun Valley department reminds drivers that "buzzed driving is drunk driving and Fourth of July party-goers need to designate a sober driver or make alternate transportation plans before holiday celebrations begin."

The blood alcohol limit for driving in Idaho is 0.08, but driving skills start to deteriorate at about 0.05, the news release states.

"It's not hard to recognize someone who's had way too much to drink," Bechen said. "But you don't have to be falling down drunk to be a serious threat to yourself and others on the road."
