Safety first

We commend the Sun Valley Elkhorn Association for continuing to prohibit "flotation devices," including all "inflatables" in both of their large swimming pools.

Their insurance carrier requires compliance with the American Red Cross Water Safety rules. As noted, "such devices could suddenly shift position, lose air or slip out from underneath, leaving a child, in a dangerous situation." Clearly, they have determined that the intrinsic value of human life is not weighed by the insurance proceeds available to grieving heirs.

If there is any doubt in the association's reasoning, visit the Sunburst Condominium pool this summer. There you will see the chaos, and danger that can arise in a smaller pool, without supervision, without a lifeguard, and without any rules prohibiting such "flotation devices" or "inflatables."
