Briefs

Police investigate vehicle burglaries

The Ketchum Police Department is investigating a series of vehicle burglaries that occurred late Sunday evening or early Monday morning in the vicinity of First Street and Washington Avenue.

Police spokeswoman Kim Rogers said Tuesday that three vehicles were burglarized. Items stolen included radios, boom boxes, CDs and "two old shotguns" that were taken from a toolbox in one of the vehicles.

"All the vehicles were unlocked," Rogers said.

'Independent America' to be shown

To highlight June as "Shop Mom and Pop" month, a special showing of the documentary "Independent America: The Two Lane Search for Mom & Pop" is scheduled at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey for Friday, June 15, at 6 p.m.

The special film showing is sponsored by the Sun Valley-Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau, the Hailey Chamber of Commerce, the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, the South Valley Merchants Alliance and the Ketchum Retail Alliance.

Documentary focuses on Legislature

"State Legislature," a new documentary by renowned filmmaker Frederick Wiseman that covers the 2004 session of the Idaho Legislature, will air on Wednesday, June 13, at 8 p.m. on Idaho Public Television.

In typical Wiseman style, nothing in the film is staged as he captures lawmakers debating a range of issues, including violence in schools, illegal immigration and second-hand smoke. The film conveys how decisions are made and power is exercised in a democratic society.

Wiseman said he chose Idaho as his subject because it's a state governed by true citizen legislatures, not career politicians.

Healthy waters topic of luncheon

The Wood River Land Trust will host an update luncheon on Thursday, June 28, from noon to 1:30 p.m. regarding the organization's latest work to protect the Big Wood River and its fish.

The luncheon will be at the home of Marsha and Kip Ingham, 118 Irene St., in Ketchum.

Seating is limited. Call Diane Kahm at 788-3947, or e-mail her at dkahm@woodriverlandtrust.org, by June 22.

Della Mountain defaced

The mystery surrounding what appears to be a large "0" painted onto the upper portion of the east face of Della Mountain above Hailey apparently won't be solved any time soon.

Both the Hailey Police Department and the Blaine County Sheriff's Office haven't received any complaints about the vandalism and have not found reason to look into the matter further.

The white figure appeared on the mountain earlier this month.

Wolverine heads to Wichita

Wood River High School student Mark Estrebillo Pedersen travels to Wichita, Kan., Saturday, June 15, to compete in the National Forensic League (also know as the other NFL) nationwide debate tournament. Estrebillo Pedersen represents WRHS in the Lincoln Douglas Debate and two speech events as well.

Estrebillo Pedersen earned the opportunity to compete in Wichita as a result of his success at the Idaho NFL district meet in March and from generous donations from the community. No school funds can be used for this competition since it is out of state and not a member of the Idaho High School Athletic Association. Expenses for Estrebillo Pedersen and his coach, Carol Stilz, have been paid by donations from debate team parents, grandparents, friends and debated team supporters.

Tainted toothpaste recalled

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a news release Friday, June 1, warning consumers to avoid using toothpaste labeled as made in China, as diethylene glycol, a toxic industrial chemical used in antifreeze, was found in Chinese-exported toothpaste sold in the Dominican Republic and Panama.

Although the FDA is not aware of any U.S. reports of poisonings from toothpaste containing the chemical, it has nonetheless expressed concern because China is the second largest exporter of toothpaste to the United States.

Dentists from the Sun Valley Dental Group recommend purchasing products made in the United States, such as Colgate, Crest and Aquafresh.

Breast cancer forum set

Patients, survivors, families, friends and health-care professionals are invited to attend a public forum presented by the Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 25, at St. Luke's Anderson Center, 5th Floor, Room Ada 2, 190 E. Bannock St. in Boise.

The free forum will discuss new advances in computerized assisted diagnosis (CAD), breast MRI and full field digital mammography, as well as the latest advances in breast cancer treatment and genetics.

The panel of experts will also host a question-and-answer session. The event is co-sponsored by St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute and St. Luke's Breast Care Services.

Seating is limited. Call (208) 381-1200 to reserve a seat.
