Morells pace their groups in Spudman

32-mile triathlon in Boise

Hailey's Matt Morell and Kathy Morell won their age classes Saturday during the 22nd annual Spudman Triathlon sponsored by the Treasure Valley Family YMCA in Boise.

The 51.5-kilometer (31.9-mile) triathlon featured a 1.5k swim starting from Spring Shores Marina past Lucky Peak Dam, a 40k bicycle ride along S.H. 21 and a 10k run along the Boise Greenbelt.

Matt Morell (2.07:03) was the sixth individual male completing the 32-mile triathlon with splits of 16:59 swim, 1.06:16 bike and 42:19 run. He won the men's 45-49 age class and was only seven minutes behind men's individual winner Adam Wirth, 29, of Boise (2.00:15)

Kathy Morell (2.25:28) just missed the podium finishing as the fourth female, but she won the 45-49 age class with splits of 21:46 swim, 1.12:14 bike and 49:36 run. Saturday's female winner was Margaret Hepworth, 44, of Boise (2.16:57).

Also doing well and finishing second in his men's 25-29 age class and 22nd overall among the individual men was Hailey's Dave Gundy (2.20:06) with splits of 20:37 swim, 1.11:53 bike and 45:52 run.

Saturday's USA Triathlon sanctioned event and national age group qualifier was also, for the third year, part of the Best of the U.S. Amateur Triathlete Competition. There were 150 athletes including team members in the race.
