"The response was overwhelming," said Chuck Gates Memorial golf tournament co-organizer Roger Roland about Sunday's nine-hole scramble at Sun Valley Golf Course.

"It was our best one yet. And everyone at Sun Valley Golf Course has been wonderful over the years."

The 10th annual Chuck Gates Memorial golf tournament attracted a record 32 foursomes to raise money for the Chuck Gates Youth Golf Endowment and the junior golf program at Ketchum's Atkinson Park.

This year's tournament raised over $5,000 for Wood River Valley junior golf. In all, over $52,000 has been raised for the Chuck Gates Youth Golf Endowment in 10 years.

Winning the gross stroke title in the Chuck "A" Flight in a scorecard playoff were Gile Williams, Bob Dunn, Kirk Anderson and Sparky Anderson (59-50). First net winners in the Chuck Flight were Mike Pirzynski, James Young, Zach Venzon and Mark Belanger (59-45).

First net winners in the Gates "B" Flight were John Kearney Jr., Kirk Mason, Max Harris and Chance McCroskey (59-44).

Long drive winners were Tom Kennedy (#16) and Mikie Geron (#8). Golfers taking closest-to-the-pin honors for the day were Don Atkinson (#15) and Garrett Goldberg (#3) along with Janet Cantor (#17) and Mikie Geron (#5).

The tournament is named for "C. Gates," who died Dec. 6, 1997 in Nevada at 51. A passionate golfer, Gates started Ketchum's first radio station, KRMR, and was a co-founder of the Idaho Mountain Express.
