Hailey receives Safe Routes grant

With the award of an Idaho Safe Routes to School grant of $84,700, the city of Hailey will be able to construct sidewalks and bike paths leading to Hailey Elementary School.

The award was announced by Hailey City Engineer Tom Hellen during a City Council meeting Monday, June 11.

In the city's original plan, the new paths would run along Elm Street to the school, with one running west from the bike path and another heading east from River Street. However, Hellen said increased costs have reduced the scope of the project.

Currently, the options are a path extending to the east only as far as Main Street and to the west as close to the bike path as funds will allow, or one continuous path from the bike path to Third Street. To complete the original plan, the city would have to spend an additional $50,000, he said.

Hailey will match the grant with $7,000 for engineering for the project.

Rather than distributing the grant money up front, the Idaho Transportation Department will reimburse the city after the project is completed. The scheduled completion date is June 2008.
