The Sun Valley ice rink improvement project is complete—and the results? Well, "we couldn't have wished for it to be any better," said ice rink manager Cory Lovoi.

Sun Valley Co. is hosting a free skate day on Sunday, June 10, to celebrate the grand reopening.

The six-week improvement project went off without a hitch, allowing the rink to reopen Thursday, a few days ahead of schedule. It was the rink's first facelift since it opened 30 years ago.

"Everything came together a little quicker than expected," said ice rink maintenance manager Ryan Baine.

Improvements included a new refrigeration system under the ice, new boards, new glass and even new seat tops for spectators.

One unexpected improvement was reshaping boards in the corners of the rink.

"When the old boards were pulled down, it was found that the radius was off in the corners," Baine said. "As it turns out, we have a true ice rink now."

The upgrades are in time for Sun Valley Co.'s usual summer ice rink activities, including summer camp figure skating and the co-ed adult summer hockey league.

"It's almost a shame we have to let hockey back in to mark it all up," Lovoi said, gazing at the unblemished expanse of ice.
