Tennis Block Party at Atkinson Park Saturday

Local tennis pros will attend Saturday's first annual "Tennis Block Party" at Ketchum's Atkinson Park, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event will feature refreshments, games, lessons and prizes. All ages are welcome. Call 726-7820 for details.

Drewien is John Hopkins men's crew captain

Josiah Drewien, a 2004 Community School graduate, has been elected captain of the men's crew team for the 2007-08 school year at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. The men's crew team travels the Eastern Seaboard and competes in eight to 10 regattas each semester.

A senior next term, Drewien has been a member of the crew team since his freshman year. The son of Debbie Drewien and Nelson Drewien, both of Hailey, is studying materials science engineering and plans to graduate from John Hopkins in May 2008.

Football players make impact in Shrine game

Blaine County and Camas County prep football players made their presence known Saturday during the annual North and South Shrine All-Star football games staged on a warm night at Bruin Stadium in Twin Falls.

Graduating Wood River High School senior Cory Rutkowski booted a 50-yard field goal giving the North squad a 10-0 lead in the 11-man grid game, but the South rallied for a 13-10 triumph.

Carey School graduating senior Cody Baird scored three touchdowns including a 76-yard TD reception and earned the North Offensive MVP award in his team's 36-28 loss to the South All-Stars in the earlier eight-man All-Star game. Camas County's Logan Ivie caught a long TD pass from his Fairfield teammate Trevor Dalin to close out the North scoring. Camas senior Andy Olson was named North Defensive MVP.

Wrangler rodeo qualifier

For the second straight year, Haillie Taylor, a Wood River Middle School seventh grade student, has qualified for the Wrangler Junior High School National Finals Rodeo July 2-7 at Gallup, N.M. She competed at Filer in the Idaho State finals June 1-3, qualifying third in a much more competitive field than last year's. Shiann Williamson of Dietrich qualified second in the same event.

Triathlon in Burley

Local triathlete Susan Gundy of Hailey successfully completed the first annual VikingMan Half Ironman Triathlon in Burley June 2 with a final time of 7.31:00 over the 70.3-mile course. There were about 370 athletes. The course featured a 1.2-mile Snake River swim, 56-mile bicycle ride and 13.1-mile half marathon run.

Idaho Time Trial Championships

Registration deadline is Tuesday, June 19 at 10 p.m. for the annual Idaho Time Trial Championships, a bicycle racing competition presented by Durance Cycleworks of Ketchum. The 40-kilometer out-and-back time trial course starts and finishes at Timmerman Hill south of Ketchum at the junction of U.S. 20 and S.H. 75. Register at durance.com/ride_guide.html.

Ultimate frisbee starts up

Ketchum's Atkinson Park fields are now open for summer use, which means Ultimate frisbee players will be meeting there Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. Start recruiting players for the summer league. You get $5 off your league fee for each player you recruit.

Lefty's men's soccer begins

Summer practices are underway for the Lefty's men's soccer team sponsored by Lefty's Bar & Grill of Ketchum. Practices are set for Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Atkinson Park, Ketchum.

New players are invited to join the competitive men's team that has four tournaments on its 2007 summer schedule. They are June 2-3 in Boise, July 7-8 at Park City, July 21-22 at Jackson Hole (Wyo.) and the Ketchum Classic Aug. 4-5 on two fields at Atkinson Park.

Later start for SVMABL men's hardball

The Sun Valley Men's Adult Baseball League (SVMABL) sponsored by Blaine County Title has a later start in this, its 12th summer of competition.

In the past the SVMABL has started the third week of June and played until late August. This year, the four-team hardball league will begin after the Independence Day holiday. All four teams will have a minimum of 11 to 12 games between July 9 and the Aug. 26 conclusion of the "World Series."

Also new: All four teams will advance to the first round of the playoffs—a best two-of-three series; game days have been changed to free up the weekends; and each team will play 10 games at Hailey's Founders Field and only two at Ketchum's Atkinson Park.

Player fees have been lowered to $170, with a $25 reward for bringing a new player into the league. Teams will be Coors Light Cyclones, Lefty's River Dogs, Waxroom Snappers and the new Wiseguy Dirtbags.

The league draft will be conducted June 28. Sign up in Ketchum with Curtis Bacca at Sun Valley Brokers (720-0704) or in Hailey with Brian Nelson at Rocky Mountain Hardware (720-7495). You must be paid up before you'll be drafted.

Festival de Futbol June 9

The Latino community is looking forward to the annual Soccer Festival (Festival de Futbol) on Saturday, June 9 from noon to 7 p.m. on the South Valley Sports Complex soccer field just south of The Community Campus in Hailey. Families are welcome to the festivities, which include activities for kids and a meal. Sponsors include Pepsi, Atkinsons', Albertson's, Splash & Dash and Twelve Baskets of Bellevue.
