As school ends, Carey students collect awards

During honors and scholarship assembly

High-achieving students accepted honors and grants May 29 when Carey High School staged its annual Citizenship Awards program in the auditorium of the school.

A highlight was the presentation of Citizenship Awards to top male and female members of the four upper classes. Teachers and staff members voted on the awards.

Citizenship Award winners in the senior class and winners of $100 grants were Brittany Hennefer and Brad Hunt. Junior winners were Bonnie Olsen and Connor Rivera.

Sophomore honorees were Amanda Adamson and Evan Dilworth. Freshman citizens at Carey were Amy Ellsworth and Nathan Van Every.

Hailey Rotary Club scholarships went to Brittany Hennefer, Emily Olsen and Allison Shaffer.

Cody Baird, Allen Peck, Emily Olsen and Allison Shaffer each received $500 Idaho Mountain Express scholarships for the year.

Brad Hunt received the US Bank Scholarship and Allison Shaffer collected the Northwest Women of Education Association scholarship.

The Wood River Valley chapter of Dollars for Scholars announced five $1,000 grants at Carey School. The winners were Serene Bingham, Allen Peck, Allison Shaffer, Brittany Hennefer and Cody Baird.

Presented for the first time at Carey School was the Josh Pollock Memorial Scholarship. Josh's mother Sheila Pollock gave the $1,200 award to Allison Shaffer. Shaffer also received a $300 Magic Valley Dairy Days grant and a $1,000 Elks Foundation Legacy award.

Four C & R Electric $500 scholarships went to Allison Shaffer, Allen Peck, Emily Olsen and Brad Hunt. The First Bank of Idaho scholarship winners were Allison Shaffer and Emily Olsen.

Building Contractors Association of the Wood River Valley/Gregg Stowe Memorial scholarships were presented by Anna Stowe to Cody Baird, Jesus Ocampo, Brittany Hennefer and Allen Peck.

Sawtooth Board of Realtors scholarships have been given to Blaine County students since 1988. This year's $1,000 winners at Carey were Allison Shaffer and Allen Peck.

Brittany Hennefer and Cody Baird earned the Blaine County Farm Bureau scholarships. Four students taking Blaine County Soil Conservation District $500 grants were Allison Shaffer, Allen Peck, Emily Olsen and Brittany Hennefer.

Receiving a $500 4-H Leadership Council Award was Cody Baird.

Works of Grace scholarships given to children of Blaine County teachers went in the amount of $6,390 to Serene Bingham and also in the amount of $4,030 to Bryce Pincock, a BYU student and son of Carey music teacher Hollis Pincock.

Other class awards

Five new National Honor Society inductees were Amanda Adamson, Emily Andrews, Kayla Bailey, Ashley Harshbarger and Shelby Hansen.

Principal John Peck congratulated four students who achieved perfect attendance for the year. They are Odalis Ocampo, Calvin Andrews, Jane Lucero and Darby Northcott. Seventh-grader Northcott hasn't missed a day of school for five straight years.

Announced were the new Student Body officers for the 2007-08 school year. The incoming president is D.J. Simpson, succeeding Allen Peck. New vice president is Ashley Harshbarger, replacing Jordan Surerus. New secretary is Josh Neilson, replacing Nathan Lichuk. New treasurer is Amanda Adamson, replacing Ashley Harshbarger.

Amanda Adamson received the Cecil B. Smith Art Award as the outstanding art student for 2006-07. It was given for the 18th time to a Carey student for art excellence. Special awards went to art aides Chelsey Hunt and Shelby Hansen.

This year's science award winner was Allison Shaffer.

"To the Max" singing group enjoyed a very successful year including a trip to Disneyland where it won a second-place performance award, right behind a bigger school.

A four-year "To the Max" award went to club president Serene Bingham. Three-year awards were given to Connor Rivera, Scott Ellsworth, Trent Parke, Nathan Lichuk, Allen Peck and Tyler Parke.

Collecting two-year "To the Max" honors were Emily Andrews, Kayla Bailey, Emily Olsen and Brooke Bingham. First-year winners were Blake Whitby, Cody Baird, D.J. Simpson, Brad Peck, Josh Neilson, Kade Peterson, Shane Bingham, Kendra Olson, Amy Ellsworth, Jessica Parke and Jazmine Gamino.

Two music students, Tyler Parke (singing bass) and Trent Parke (playing oboe) went to the prestigious All-Northwest gathering in Portland, Ore., and Trent Parke's oboe playing took first place in the Fourth District contest this year.

Drama awards were given in the traditional categories:

Best actor and actress—Drama Club president Emily Olsen, Jordan Surerus and Mark Adamson. Best supporting actor and actress—Kendra Olson and D.J. Simpson. Rookie awards—Amanda Adamson and Heith Adamson. Best stage technician—John Patterson.

Next year's Drama Club president is Jordan Surerus. And next year's yearbook editor is Katrina Molyneux.

Sports honors

Track and field coaches Lane Kirkland and Lee Cook gave out letters of participation and full letters to the students on the team.

Top four point-getters on the girls' track team were Kayla Bailey, Serene Bingham, Taylor Whitby and Jessica Parke. Earning the top boys' points, from first to fourth, were Blake Whitby, Cody Baird, Kade Peterson and D.J. Simpson.

Panther boys' track athletes climbing into the top-10 all-time in various events were Blake Whitby (2nd all-time 3200m), Kade Peterson, Jeff Ellingson, Allen Peck, Brad Hunt, James Carlson, Cody Baird, Dillon Simpson and Heith Adamson.

Incoming Hall of Fame athletes, doing three events for four straight years, were Brad Hunt, Allen Peck, Cody Baird and Allison Shaffer.

Next year's Panther cheerleaders are captain Jazmine Gamino, Ashley Harshbarger, Chelsey Hunt, Taylor Whitby, Jennifer Murphy, Candace Hennefer, Amanda Adamson and Shuressa Rodriquez. Mascot is Nathan Van Every.

This year's Carey Rodeo Club competitors were Brittany Hennefer, Katrina Molyneux, Kelsey Green and Kyle Brooks. Incoming Rodeo Club president is Katrina Molyneux.

Kristy and Lonnie Barg were honored by the Carey Athletic Association (CAA) as the "Panther Boosters of the Year." They receive free admission to next year's home games for the Carey Panthers.

And the new CAA president is Jennifer Cenarrusa.
