Honor fallen on Memorial Day

Lest we forget, Memorial Day this year is Monday, May 28. Memorial Day was first officially observed in 1882 as a day set aside to remember and honor the sacrifice of those who died in all our nation's wars. It's a time for Americans to reconnect with their history by honoring those who gave their lives for the ideals we cherish. However, it is also a day that gives opportunity for all Americans to remember and honor their family and friends who have passed on before them.

All too often in today's society, Memorial Day has come to mean simply a three-day weekend. Suddenly this honorable day is recognized by the first camping, golfing, boating and barbecue-filled weekend of the summer. Can society compromise? Enjoy the "fun in the sun," but cut it short to allow time to visit an old friend's grave or gather with family to place flowers or release balloons in remembrance of those passed. As it is said, "...gone but not forgotten."

There are almost 7,000 people living in Hailey. How many realize there are 350 known veterans buried in the Hailey Cemetery? Or, how many of you know that a small group of us remember every year by honorably placing a small American Flag at their gravesites? The result, a small-town cemetery transformed into a beautiful sea of red, white and blue.

Please take every year to honor those who've passed, be it a veteran, friend, or family member. Take the time to drive through your local cemetery, which will be decorated from Friday, May 25, to the evening of Monday, May 28, and see our town's history come to life. See our fallen remembered.

There will be a Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at the Hailey Cemetery. All are welcome to attend. Let us never forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.
